Georgia Southern University is a public, coeducational research university located in Statesboro, which is the county seat and the most populated city of Bulloch County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
Georgia Southern University was founded in 1908, as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School, its mission and name being changed in 1924, to Georgia Normal School, transforming into a training ground for educators. The athletic teams from Georgia Southern University are known as the Georgia Southern Eagles, who compete in the NCAA Division I FCS as members of the Southern Conference, in various sports, including in basketball, baseball, football, golf, softball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The Eagles are best known for their achievements in football, in which they won a total of six NCAA Division I-AA national championships – in '85, '86, '89, '90, '99 and 2000 – and baseball, having 2 appearances in the College World Series – in '73 and '90.
