About Georgia Southern University

Georgia Southern University is a public, coeducational research university located in Statesboro, which is the county seat and the most populated city of Bulloch County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of more than 27 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1908, as the First District Agricultural & Mechanical School, its mission and name being changed in 1924, to Georgia Normal School, transforming into a training ground for educators. After experiencing many changes, over the years, since it first opened its doors to students, the institution experienced the most significant change in its identity, in 1990, when it became known as Georgia southern University.

Since then, Georgia Southern has grown into the renowned educational institution that we known today, being the 5th largest university in the University System of Georgia, which is the largest center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia, offering its nearly 20 000 students, more than 115 bachelor’s and master’s degrees, including Doctorate programs through 8 colleges.

The university has been highly ranked by various significant educational-related magazines, such as U.S. News & World Report, which named it one of `America’s Best Colleges`, the Princeton Review, which placed it among the `301 Best Business Schools` in USA, as well as among the `296 Best Business Schools` in the country, including the Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, which named it one of the `Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges` and Forbes, which also placed it among `America’s Best Colleges`.

The athletic teams from Georgia Southern University are known as the Georgia Southern Eagles, who compete in the NCAA Division I FCS as members of the Southern Conference, in various sports, including in basketball, baseball, football, golf, softball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. The Eagles are best known for their achievements in football, in which they won a total of six NCAA Division I-AA national championships – in '85, '86, '89, '90, '99 and 2000 – and baseball, having 2 appearances in the College World Series – in '73 and '90.
